Job Description

Work LocationThis internship is designed to be full-time, in-person in NY; however, it can be adjusted based on the availability of the successful candidates. Expected durationSix months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrg. Setting and Reporting The Internship is in the Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section, with focus on Outreach Programmes on the Holocaust and the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. The Section is part of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. The Outreach Programmes were established by the United Nations General Assembly, and continue to build a network of partnerships with civil society, governments, educators and organizations engaged in education, research and commemoration. The Programmes organize the annual commemorative events at United Nations Headquarters in New York, and develop educational resources including multimedia products, teaching guides and exhibits, for use at United Nations Headquarters and in the field. Two internship positions are available, unpaid and full-time for a period of six months. The Interns will work up to five days per week (35 hours). Interns work in the United Nations Headquarters in New York under the supervision of a UN staff member to which they are assigned. Responsibilities Working under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, the interns will assist the Outreach Programmes’ team with its daily tasks. The selected interns may perform some of the following functions: - Assist with conducting research on thematic issues related to the Outreach Programmes, including Human Rights, genocide and international affairs. - Assist with drafting, formatting, editing and posting original website content/news stories, including graphics, photographs and video. - Assist with drafting social media content. - Assist with planning and organization of outreach events, including researching speakers, preparing invitations and promotional materials. - Assist with general office support. - Performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in human rights, international relations, history, Holocaust studies, communications, media studies, or related fields (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in human rights, international relations, history, Holocaust studies, communications, media studies, or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above); Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Required and Desirable Work Experience 1) Skills and experience in researching thematic issues related to the Outreach Programmes’ mandates are highly desirable. 2) Skills and experience in writing, social media, graphic design and multimedia production are highly desirable. 3) Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are working languages of the UN Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
